Schooling Options for Expat Children in Switzerland in Zurich

Public schools, international schools, and private options for expat families.

All cantonsZurichGeneva

Switzerland has an excellent public education system, but language of instruction varies by region — German in Zurich, French in Geneva. International schools offer English-language education but are expensive.

Public schools

Public schools are free and mandatory for children aged 4–16. Contact your commune's Schulamt (school office) to enrol. Children are usually placed in the local school for their district.

International schools

Zurich International School (ZIS), Institut Florimont (Geneva), and many others offer IB programmes in English. Annual fees range from CHF 20,000 to CHF 40,000+. Waiting lists are long — apply as early as possible.

Language immersion

Many expat children thrive in local public schools with language support. Zurich public schools offer German integration classes (DaZ — Deutsch als Zweitsprache). Geneva offers similar French-language support.
